My successes.

Heaney reports that DeFinis has instilled a keen awareness of costs, sales, and growth potential for his company. “I was always a dreamer who focused on the creative side. Fred made me learn that numbers are just as important.”

“Bobby is at the stage of refining his business model while continuing to grow and plan for the future,” DeFinis says. “He keeps detailed financial and operational records and has developed an employee policy handbook used in hiring and training his part-time guides.”

Boston Crawling has earned accolades from travel sites like TripAdvisor, and continues to experience increasing revenue.

How SCORE helped.

Boston Crawling provides Boston history tours that feature local craft beer along the way.  Our SCORE mentor has instilled a keen awareness of  the growth potential for the company.

What's great about my mentor?

Heaney checked out SCORE figuring that it couldn’t hurt to seek business knowledge from a free resource. He has attended a few workshops, “But I have found that I get so much more out of one-on-one sessions with my mentor,” Heaney says.

“Boston Crawling was in its absolute infancy when I first met my mentor Fred DeFinis,” Heaney says. “I was just some guy with an idea for a historic pub crawl.” DeFinis “helped me with everything from creating the product to getting that first sale to growth to managing new hires. He helped me every step of the way.” Heaney reports that although he no longer needs weekly guidance from DeFinis, he still communicates frequently with his mentor by email and phone.

How Did Your Business Get Started?

Bobby Heaney went to school to get a law degree, but now he’s a history teacher. Well, sort of. As the owner of Boston Crawling, he has designed history tours of one of America’s oldest cities that feature local craft beer along the way. “We like to say we offer the history your 8th grade social studies teacher left out,” Heaney says. “It’s a fun, informative, and memorable to spend your time in Boston….with beer!”

Starting a business was a bold step in itself, but Heaney admits he never had people working under him until he started Boston Crawling. He ran the business for a year before hiring anyone. Now, he’s focused on growing the company.
